CT Scan
What is CT Scan ?
A CT (or CAT) scan is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. It is essentially a medical imaging technique used in the field of radiology to get detailed images of various parts of the body for diagnostic purposes. A CT scan eliminates overlapping structures, hence making body part very clear and apparent.
This generates a three-dimensional image of an object inside the body. CT scans enable radiologists and physicians to identify internal structures and see their shape, size, density and texture. This information can be utilised in determining a possible medical problem and also in providing the location and extent of the problem, in order to be able to treat it more effectively. Images may also show the absence of an abnormality.
WHY CT ?
- To diagnose muscle and bone disorders, including tumours or cancers in various organs and body parts and fractures if any.
- To diagnose abnormalities of lungs such as pneumonia.
- To guide certain medical procedures such as surgery, biopsy or radiation therapy.
- To detect internal injuries and bleeding, such as those caused by a road accident or a fall.
- To get very clear images of soft tissue injuries that surround a bone, which cannot be seen on a regular X ray
- To examine causes of respiratory infections in certain diseases.
- Quickly identify injuries to the lungs, heart and vessels, liver, spleen, kidneys, bowel or other internal organs in cases of trauma
- To detect stones (in the gallbladder or kidneys)
